On Saturday, 06/03/17 at 2:00 PM Foreign Film Series: Saturday, June 3: Life Above All (2010) South African drama directed by Oliver Schmitz. Just after the death of her newly born sister, 12-year-old Chanda learns of a rumor that spreads like wildfire through her dust-ridden village near Johannesburg. It destroys her family and forces her mother to flee. Sensing that the gossip stems from prejudice and superstition, Chanda leaves home and school in search of her mother and the truth. Join us for screenings of a variety of films from around the world. Film is typically shown on the first Saturday of each month. All movies have English subtitles. Screenings will begin at 2:00 p.m.

Young readers will be able to share stories with a furry friend. Dogs will never judge or correct them, which allows them to really improve their reading skills. Drop in.

On Wednesday, 06/14/17 at 6:30 PM Ready to Serve – Storytelling by Ellouise Schoettler: Join us as Ellouise Schoettler, a national known storyteller and spoken-word artist, tells the forgotten story of WWI Nurses from Johns Hopkins Hospital who served in France. When called they answered “I am ready to serve.” Hear the story created from their letters exactly 100 years after these brave nurses set sail for France. A resident of Chevy Chase, MD, Ellouise Schoettler is a North Carolina native and 24 year professional storytelling veteran. She calls herself an “old-time Southern teller,” just like the family storytellers she grew up listening to on the front porch and around the dinner table. “The story is fascinating and worthwhile, a little slice of history that hasn’t received the attention it deserves. Schoettler embodies her character completely, and before long it’s easy to forget that she’s playing a character at all.” DCist
On Friday, 06/16/17 at 10:30 AM Jefferson Café: This month’s article is Populism on the March by Fareed Zakaria; Foreign Affairs, Nov/Dec 2016. We hope everyone will feel comfortable participating. The group is fairly small so that everyone can see and hear everyone else while seated around a table. Copies of the articles to be discussed will be available without charge on the holds shelf at the library.
On Saturday, 06/17/17 at 10:30 AM Under the Sea: Gives an overview of life in our oceans, including a variety of LIVE SEA ANIMALS, such as a clam, a hermit crab, a spider crab, one large and one small sea snail, a seastar or urchin, a clown fish, and even a baby shark! Real marine artifacts are shown, such as whale baleen, a preserved sea turtle, a sea turtle rib, and others. All presentations include a discussion of ecology, habitat, and conservation. This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Chevy Chase Chapter. This is a summertime program for children of all ages and their families.
On Thursday, 06/22/17 at 3:00 PM Harry Potter Open House: Attention Witches and Wizards: celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone at an open house at Chevy Chase Library from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm! We will have games and activities for all ages. Feel free to come dressed in your house colors or as your favorite character. No registration needed.

Live animals from each layer of the forest will be featured along with stories of survival in this fascinating and endangered environment. Featured animals may include an iguana, boa constrictor, tegu lizard, and other rainforest creatures. This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County, Inc. This is a summertime program for children of all ages and their families.
